Argentina is in Southern South America, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean,
between Chile and
Uruguay. Argentina has borders with
Bolivia 832 km (520 miles),
Brazil 1,224 km (765 miles), Chile 5,150
km (3218 miles), Paraguay 1,880 km (1,175
miles), Uruguay 579 km (362 miles).
Argentina is the second-largest country in South America (after
Brazil); strategic location relative to sea lanes between the South Atlantic and
the South Pacific Oceans (Strait of Magellan, Beagle Channel, Drake Passage);
Cerro Aconcagua is South America's tallest mountain, while Laguna del Carbon is
the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere.
Following independence from Spain in 1816, Argentina experienced
periods of internal political conflict between conservatives and liberals and
between civilian and military factions. After World War II, a long period of
Peronist rule was followed by a military junta that took power in 1976.
Democracy returned in 1983.

reintroduced Daylight-Saving Time on 30 December 2007.
The government of Argentina announced a plan in December 2007 to save
energy which will include the reintroduction of a daylight saving time
scheme. All clocks will spring forward an hour at midnight local time 30
December 2007 and will continue until 16 March 2008. This is an
attempt to address a possible power shortage during the summer.
